Sober Podcast 303 - The Problem with Online Sober Groups

As a warning, I’ll begin with this:

You may disagree with this podcast, and what I describe here may NOT be your experience. In which case you’ll listen to this and say “yeah, OK fine, but online forums worked for me.”

My own personal view is that oftentimes an online sober group feels like junior high school. It can be cliquey, it can seem like there are more popular people. My comments aren’t ‘liked’ enough. And then being worried about ‘do they like me’ can really muddy the waters when you’re a shy person on day 5.

I will keep saying “this is just my opinion” – and I know that all sober coaches have groups, paid or free. I don’t. I don’t think they work as well as we hope they will. Mostly because you and me, we’re not (always) extroverted AND thick-skinned. We’re more often shy, nervous, embarrassed, and we’re nothing like thick-skinned at all!
