Sober Podcast 227 - Got Money, Got Sober?

We tend to think that other people don't have problems like WE have problems. And one of the most common wolfie justifications i hear about drinking is related to having a stressful financial situation.

So i thought, ok, what would it be like to interview someone who is more well off financially, and see what it's like for them to be sober.

Thanks to DaFroDoctor for being brave and participating in this podcast with me.

Now I'm curious to hear your thoughts, the parts that resonate with you, and perhaps you can share with me one a-ha moment from the audio :)

Feedback from listener:

CaseStudyMichelle: "I enjoyed your conversation with DaFroDoctor. Please let him know that I said thank you for sharing his story/perspective. That's a big deal to put your voice out there. We all want to be free from concern. Perhaps that's another way of saying we all want an escape. You've talked before about escape (or the fantasy of escape) as an excuse we use to drink. Money does not make us free from concern. And just because someone did not have to worry about having enough money for groceries does not mean that they lack personal drive. It is not uncommon for those with a 'silver spoon' to have enormous pressure put upon them to succeed to unrealistic levels. There can be an expectation that they surpass the success of those who gave them that spoon...earn more money, have a higher title, rub shoulders with bigger names, have more of everything. I certainly wouldn't want those sorts of concerns.

Listening to DaFroDoctor share pieces about his personal life, it occurred to me that, in terms of demographics, I have very little in common with him. He's male, I'm not. He's married, I'm not. He has a child, I don't. He's self-employed, I'm not. I am 17 years older than him. But, what we have in common is so much more important. We both knew we were drinking more than we wanted. We both made deals with ourselves (I won't drink Monday-Thursday) and then broke those deals. We both found ourselves drinking alone for no reason. What a shame that, as a group, we seem hell-bent on insisting that our situation is unique. It keeps us each in our own silos instead of in a more collective pool.

I look forward to seeing DaFroDoctor listed in a Celebration Roundup post on your blog when he gets to 50 days!"
